The smash hit stage version of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird arrives at the Liverpool Empire this spring.
The production of the seminal American tale, adapted for the stage by Oscar-winning Aaron Sorkin as a tense courtroom drama, will be at the Lime Street venue from May 12-16 as part of a UK and Ireland tour.
And demand for tickets for the Liverpool run has now led the Empire to add an additional matinee performance on the afternoon of Thursday, May 14.
The powerful and enduring coming-of-age story of racial injustice and childhood innocence is set in 1930s Alabama where lawyer Atticus Finch tries to prove the innocence of Tom Robinson, a Black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman.
While Finch encourages kindness and empathy in his children Scout and Jem, he is pushed to the limits of these qualities himself when he resolves to uncover the truth in a town that seems determined to hide it.
More than 45 million copies of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic have been sold worldwide since it was released in 1960.
This stage version, directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, opened on Broadway and then received its UK premiere at London’s Gielgud Theatre in 2022 where it garnered five-star reviews and was nominated for six Olivier Awards.
Anna Munden plays Scout Finch and Harry Attwell is Boo Radley. Casting for Atticus Finch in Liverpool is yet to be announced.
