A film documentary which tells the story of the remarkable women who were part of the steely backbone of the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike is set to receive a special screening in Liverpool this month.

Iron Ladies will be shown at Picturehouse at FACT on November 20 followed by a special Q&A with Rose Hunter of the North Staffs Miners’ Wives Action Group, who is featured in the film, and moderator Abi O’Connor.

Tickets are £14.85 for adults with concessions.

In addition, there will also be a screening at Lucem House in St Helens on November 21, although that won’t include a Q&A.

The film, which is on general release in UK cinemas, was made by Liverpool-based independent production company Shut Out the Light Films which specialises in documentaries, film production and distribution. Its previous work includes The Big Meeting and Almost Liverpool 8.

Iron Ladies, directed by Daniel Draper, is the story of the women, from Scotland to Kent, who were at the heart of the year-long Miners’ Strike, as told by 20 of them. In it, they shed light on their experiences of the struggle against the British state to save their communities.

With many of them still active today, they helped reshape the landscape of political activism for working class women.

Shut Out the Light's Christie Allanson says: "Working-class narratives by working-class filmmakers are a rarity. The communal viewing of this film on the big screen is important to spark those conversations about the political landscape past and present.

"The funding, the approach to filmmaking and the contributors all have one thing in common - passion. As the producer, I feel inspired and empowered by these women, and I hope audiences will feel that way too."

She adds: “We're really pleased it will be playing in our hometown of Liverpool. Even though it's not a mining area, the Liverpool dockers supported the miners and vice versa, and we know the people of Liverpool understand the importance of solidarity.”

Iron Ladies is at Picturehouse at FACT on November 20 at 7pm. Tickets HERE
