A powerful and poignant play which takes an unflinching look at the challenges faced by working-class young men in Britain today is set to return to the Hope Street Theatre this month.
Playwright Gareth Farr’s Britannia Waves the Rules received acclaim when it was staged at the venue last autumn.
Now Wirral’s Off the Ground Theatre, which presented the original production, is bringing it back for three nights only, from January 14-16.
Carl Jackson is a young man from Blackpool who feels trapped by the small-town expectations around him. Longing for something bigger, he joins the army, searching for purpose, escape, and a sense of belonging.
But when he finds himself in the middle of modern warfare, the reality of combat and its consequences prove far from the glory he imagined.
Farr’s award-winning script examines the lure of escape, the brutal realities of conflict and the difficult return home.
Off The Ground Theatre’s Connor Wray says: “After five-star reviews and a near sold out run last time, we’re so pleased to be able to bring this piece back. It felt important the first time around, and it feels even more so now.
“We’re really privileged to enjoy a strong relationship with the Hope Street Theatre and this revival will, we hope, only strengthen that, as we look to continue creating theatre that focuses on the important questions facing us all, through the lens of the human condition.
“We’ve loved having the opportunity to take an even finer, more detailed look at some of the moments in the play, making even more sense of it and discovering new levels to the emotional turmoil that Carl goes through, and we can’t wait for Liverpool audiences of to come and enjoy it again.”
Britannia Waves the Rules is at the Hope Street Theatre from January 14-16. Tickets HERE
