Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre to return for August

Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre is set to take place after all this summer – after its original planned season was postponed.

Storyhouse artistic director Alex Clifton will lead an outdoor production of The Comedy of Errors from August 8-30.

It replaces Taming of the Shrew, The Jungle Book and Pride and Prejudice which have been moved to summer 2021.

The eight-strong Comedy of Errors cast will work in a ‘bio-bubble’ with regular testing as part of a series of Covid-safe measures to make sure the shows can go ahead and be enjoyed by live audiences. They are currently rehearsing on Zoom or outdoors.

There will be a maximum audience of 150 at each performance – 25% of normal capacity, meaning only 4,000 tickets are available for sale for the entire run.

Both performers and audiences will be expected to manage social distancing, and people will be asked to wear face coverings when moving around but not when sitting down.

There will also be staggered entrance times, and part of each ticket price is a donation to help manage the risk in case of a local lockdown.

Chief executive Andrew Bentley said: “We’re the country’s leading pop-up open-air theatre producer and we had to postpone this year’s entire season because the government couldn’t give us the go-ahead in time.

“It’s probably just as well, because 2020 was looking like a complete sell out so may well have been too busy.

“But here we are again, an opportunity to get out there and help lead our industry out of lockdown.

“The country’s theatres are in hibernation, but that’s not our way, and Storyhouse has now been open safely since July 4. It’s the job of the UK’s theatres to open and serve their communities where they can.”

The Comedy of Errors will run for 34 performances between August 8-30. Tickets go on sale to members today and general sale on August 3.
