Review: Corrina, Corrina at Liverpool Everyman ****1/2

Power, patriarchy, privilege and the politics of capitalism combine in Chloe Moss’s compelling and claustrophobic new play on deck at the Everyman. Corrina, Corrina (its title a nod to the 1960 Ray Peterson song, not the Whoopi Goldberg film) is an exploration of what happens when these things are abused and exploited, either deliberately or through careless disregard. Corrina (Laura Elsworthy) is that rare thing – a woman in a male-dominated industry, plying the world’s busy

Calderstones hosts Globe's open air Julius Caesar

Shakespeare’s Globe returns to The Reader at Calderstones next month to perform in the mansion house’s historic art deco garden theatre. The new touring production of Julius Caesar will be staged on June 3-4 and is the first time the Globe has visited the venue in five years. Director Diane Page said: “I’m so excited to bring my production of Julius Caesar straight from the Globe theatre in London to tour across the UK. These past few years have revealed more than ever how be

Liverpool 4 Ukraine show raising funds for displaced artists

Venues in the Baltic Triangle are showcasing work from some of the best Ukrainian artists and creatives. The Liverpool 4 Ukraine exhibition runs until June 18 and hopes to raise much-needed funds for the artists. A QR code on each work will enable people to buy prints of their favourites. Work is on show at Space by Liquid, 92 Degrees Coffee, Chapters of Us, Baltic Social, Black Lodge Brewery, Elevator Studios and SEVENSTORE. And the show is being sponsored by Baltic Creative

If the last two years have taught us anything it’s that human connection is vitally important to our wellbeing – and yet while we’re instantly linked to the world at the swipe of a screen, many of us feel more disconnected and alone than ever. Tim Firth has taken ideas of the power of communication, of human interaction, of finding childlike joy in life’s small moments, of grief and memory, and of the importance of community, and has created a slice of theatrical whimsy which

Tudor Court brings finery and intrigue to Walker Art Gallery

The Tudor dynasty takes centre stage in all its bejewelled glory in the Walker Art Gallery’s blockbuster summer show. The Tudors: Passion, Power and Politics, which opens today, features almost 70 works from the National Portrait Gallery Collection alongside art from the Walker and other precious loaned objects from public and private sources and collections, some of which have rarely been seen on display in public. The exhibition is being billed as a ‘once-in-a-generation’ c

Barenboim and Terfel lead RLPO new season programme

Superstar pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, baritone Sir Bryn Terfel and not one but two of the talented Kanneh-Mason siblings will be involved in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s 2022/23 season which has been revealed at a special launch in front of hundreds of people at the Philharmonic Hall. Folk music, special anniversaries for Vaughan Williams and Rachmaninov, a Puccini screwball opera, further South American and French repertoire and a host of international pian

Beryl Marsden to celebrate musical anniversary with Epstein Theatre gig

Merseybeat star Beryl Marsden is set to celebrate 60 years since she made her singing debut with a special one-off concert in Liverpool this summer. The August 27 event at the Epstein Theatre coincides with International Beatleweek and will be hosted by Billy Butler, with special guests joining the singer on stage. Marsden, born Beryl Hogg in Toxteth, was just 15 when she first stepped on stage at the Cavern in 1962 where she was invited to sing with The Undertakers – later j

Jim Cartwright’s much-loved, award-winning tale about finding your voice turns the big 30 this year. And while some elements of the play are showing their age, its themes of conflict, communication, escapism, economic hardship and domestic violence remain as pertinent in 2022 as they did in 1992. Little Voice (Christina Bianco) lives in slummish conditions (evoked through Sara Perks’ imposing, cut through two-storey set) in an un-named northern town with her brassy, colourful

What a difference a day – well, three days – makes. Bulgarian superstar soprano Sonya Yoncheva was forced to pull out of her Liverpool debut on Thursday night due to illness, with Jennifer Johnston stepping in as a last-minute replacement. But she made a heroic recovery to be back on vocal form for this Sunday afternoon concert conducted by husband Domingo Hindoyan. Gliding on to the stage in flowing Grecian-style jumpsuit and with her every move recorded by a trio of cameras
