New season of Storyhouse Originals for Chester stage
Chester Storyhouse has revealed its new season of ‘Storyhouse Originals’ with six new homegrown productions set to be staged at the venue between October and next June.
The line-up of work forms the 11th season of plays produced by the organisation which started life as Chester Performs and opened the Storyhouse site two years ago.
More than 20 local groups will be involved in devising and staging the season, working alongside world-class storytellers.
The autumn will see a new a new commission of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella about the divided mind - The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - by Wirral-raised playwright and poet Glyn Maxwell, made in collaboration with Fallen Angels Dance Theatre and running from October 5-19.
A trio of works will run in repertory on the Storyhouse thrust stage in February and March – The Suicide, based on Russian playwright Nikolai Erdman’s 1928 black comedy; Jessica Swale’s acclaimed play Blue Stockings about four girls’ fight for the right to graduate, and a new version of August Strindberg’s classic play of fraught sexual tension, Miss Julie, set in 1930s Hong Kong.
And spring will see new disco musical version of Brewster’s Millions (May 8 to June 14), along with Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone which will be staged between May 15 and June 16.
Artistic director Alex Clifton (pictured) said: “This year at Storyhouse we’re doubling the amount of theatre we make to offer you a season that celebrates our creative communities and tells powerful personal stories about living here and now.
“Everything here inspires strong feelings. We have a black comedy Stalin banned for being too dangerous; a new disco musical about an instantaneous millionaire single mother and a drag king; a brutal psychological horror so frightening the author burnt his manuscript to try and destroy it forever; a passionate thriller banned in the UK for being too explicit; an ancient but urgent political tragedy, and the story of four women on a crusade to fight for the right to education.”
