St George's Day celebrations at St George's Hall

St George’s Hall will mark the patron saint of England’s day with a series of special tours which give visitors a peek behind the scenes at the 164-year-old landmark.

The guided tours will take people behind the Great Hall’s stained-glass window which pictures St George, as well as other usually off-limits parts of the grade I listed building including narrow and steep staircases.

Four tours will take place across the day on Tuesday, April 23 – at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm – and cost £5.50 per person. Advanced booking is recommended.

Meanwhile the annual unveiling of St George’s Hall’s famous Minton tiled floor will take place this August.

The mosaic floor, which is made up of 30,000 handcrafted tiles picturing the city’s coat of arms along with dolphins, tritons and sea nymphs, will be uncovered from August 1-26.

It has only been unveiled eight times since the Hall reopened in 2007 following refurbishment work. Last year more than 22,000 people came to see the floor.

Entry for 2019 will be £3 per person, and a number of ‘tiles tours’ will take place which will give visitors a chance to put on protective shoe covers and walk on the floor itself.
