Beatles White Album 50th anniversary concerts on Liverpool Pier Head

Two star-studded charity concerts are set to be staged on the Liverpool waterfront this September to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ White Album.

A bespoke 10,000-capacity outdoor arena will be created on the Pier Head for the September 8-9 shows.

Money raised from the events will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Nordoff Robbins music therapy charity.

Tickets are now on sale costing from £45.

The concerts come from the same team which staged the Number One Project during Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year.

The full line-up is yet to be revealed, but those involved so far include Badly Drawn Boy, Mark Almond, Martha Reeves, China Crisis, Space and Mike Rutherford from Genesis and Mike and the Mechanics. Janice Long will host both concerts and Roger McGough will also be involved, along with Sense of Sound.

The White Album tracks will be followed by a finale of 15 Beatles’ favourites chosen and performed by all those artists taking part, accompanied by the Prague International Orchestra conducted by extrovert Czech legend Varhan.

Roger Daltrey, a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust, said today: “We are delighted to be involved in such a special concert as this and it will give us a chance to show the people of Liverpool what Teenage Cancer Trust is all about.

"The White Album is such an amazing record and it’s a brilliant way to celebrate it at 50 years old."

The Fab Four released their famous album – officially called The Beatles but known as the ‘White Album’ – on November 22, 1968. Many of the 30 tracks on the record were written while the band were in Rishikesh earlier that year.
