Take a Passage to India at Liverpool Playhouse

EM Forster’s classic tale set against the backdrop of the 1920s British Raj is being brought to the stage at the Playhouse this week.

A Passage to India follows the story of Dr Aziz, and how his attempts – against advice – to make friends with the British end in accusations, imprisonment and bitterness, laying bare the racial tensions at the heart of an imperial India in the grip of a growing independence movement.

The book was turned in to an acclaimed, Oscar-winning film by David Lean in the 1980s.

Here, the story, accompanied by live music played by composer Kuljit Bhamra, is brought to the stage by simple8 and Royal & Derngate in an adaptation by Simon Dormandy – who Playhouse audiences might remember from The Hudsucker Proxy.

Meanwhile Phoebe Price, who in 2016 at the Playhouse with her father Jonathan Pryce in The Merchant of Venice, plays Adela Quested.

The sights, sounds, smells and feel of India will be recreated as the story of Aziz, Adela, Mrs Moore, Cyril Fielding and Ronny Heaslop unfolds.
