Liverpool Empire run for Boys From the Blackstuff

A celebrated production of Alan Bleasdale’s seminal Boys From the Blackstuff returns to Liverpool in 2025 – but this time it is set to be staged at the Empire.

Bill Kenwright Ltd will bring the Royal Court’s show to the Lime Street theatre from March 25-29, forming part of the venue’s centenary celebrations.

Tickets go on pre-sale to ATG members this morning, and on general sale tomorrow at 10am.

Award-winning playwright James Graham’s stage version was premiered at the Royal Court in 2023, and after a second run there this spring went on to transfer to the National Theatre in May. It is currently on at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End.

It’s 80s Liverpool. Chrissie, Loggo, George, Dixie and Yosser are used to hard work and providing for their families. But there is no work and there is no money. What are they supposed to do? Work harder, work longer, buy cheaper, spend less? They just need a chance.

Life is tough but the lads can play the game. Find jobs, avoid the ‘sniffers' and see if you can have a laugh along the way.

The Blackstuff announcement follows news that Liverpool favourite Blood Brothers will also return to the Empire for 2025.

Theatre manager Diane Belding says: “2025 will be a banner year for the Empire. We’re proud and excited that these two classic Liverpool favourites will be with us next spring during our 100th birthday celebrations.

“Both productions are guaranteed to get the Liverpool City Region buzzing.”

The Boys From the Blackstuff is at the Liverpool Empire from March 25-29, 2025. Tickets HERE
