Angela Simms and Ellie Clayton are set to play friends Teresa and Elaine when Letter to Brezhnev is staged at Liverpool’s Royal Court this autumn.

Cinema's much-loved 1980s Liverpool-set love story is coming to the stage in an adaptation by its original screenwriter Frank Clarke.

It will be premiered at the Roe Street theatre from September 11 to October 17.

The cast also includes Liam Powell-Berry as Sergei, Thomas Cotran as Peter, with Michelle Butterly, Dominic Carter, Reginald Edwards, Zach Levine, Maya Rugan and Leona Sinama-Pongolle.

Teresa and Elaine are young, beautiful and full of life. But they don’t think that will last long, because it’s 1985 and this is Kirkby.

Sergei and Peter are fresh off the boat and revelling in being away from the Soviet Union. Liverpool has opened their eyes.

Teresa is looking for sex and a smile, Elaine wants love, romance and the dream of a life far away from the grime of Liverpool. All of them have the chance to forget their lives and live their dreams for one glorious night.

Royal Court executive producer Kevin Fearon said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming back some familiar faces, and a few new ones, to the Royal Court this autumn.

Liverpool stories are at the heart of what we do here, because it’s vitally important that everyone gets to see themselves on a stage, no matter who they are or where they’re from in the city.

“Letter to Brezhnev is part of Liverpool history. We’ve had an incredibly positive and enthusiastic response to the show from our audience and they’re snapping up tickets. This is going to be a huge moment in the city’s cultural calendar.”
