River of Light returns to the city’s waterfront this autumn and this year the 10-night free festival has the theme of the Science of Light.
Follow a 1.8mile (3km) trail of light sculptures and installations along the banks of the Mersey and through the city’s business district between October 24 and November 2.
Ten largescale artworks will be on show in this eighth edition of the festival, all inspired by science, technology or nature.
Among them will be Dandelion (pictured above), by Australian artists – and River of Light regulars - Amigo and Amigo and which is inspired by the titular flower and its petals which some cultures revere for their medicinal qualities.
Other installations due to be showcased include New York design firm Yellow Studios’ Within Water, a new commission for River of Light which explores the natural phenomenon of marine bioluminescence, and Face Value – also a new commission – which uses AI and robotics to create an interactive light art game experience, created by scientist Emma Brass, artist Venya Krutikov and Liverpool’s Invisible Wind Factory.
The annual event is staged by the Liverpool City Council’s culture team and last year attracted around 140,000 visitors over its 10-day run.
River of Light takes place from October 24 to November 2. More details HERE
