Storyhouse to stage A Christmas Carol this festive season

It’s bah humbug to Coronavirus at Storyhouse with news that the venue is set to stage A Christmas Carol over the festive season.

The new Storyhouse Originals production of the Dickens’ favourite was due to open at the Chester cultural venue on November 7 before the latest national lockdown.

But with Chester covered by Tier 2, the show is now going on from today - December 2 - instead.

Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future will converge on the Hunter Street theatre in Covid-safe fashion with audiences limited to 200 per show – around 40% capacity – which will take place on the theatre’s thrust stage and will run straight through with no interval.

Storyhouse artistic director Alex Clifton, who is writing and directing, said: “It’s going to make you cry and giggle your heart out; it’s the ultimate tale of redemption and how Christmas can make us all realise what’s important to us – family and community, something we all need more than ever right now.

“It’s a tale for every generation and hopefully can give us all a joyful taste of our normal lives, as we spend Christmas together at Storyhouse.”

Dickens’ festive novella was first published on December 19 1843 (selling out its initial run by Christmas Eve that year), and has entertained and enchanted generations of readers – as well as theatre audiences, cinema goers and TV viewers – ever since.

It was also a favourite text for the author to share with packed audiences at his many public readings up and down the country.

Dickens read A Christmas Carol during an appearance at Chester's Music Hall in August 1858.

A Christmas Carol is at Storyhouse from December 2 to January 17. Tickets HERE
