RLPO cancels September and October concerts
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has announced that its planned new season concerts for September and October have been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The 2020/21 season – Vasily Petrenko’s last as chief conductor – was due to have opened on Saturday, September 26 with soloist Mao Fujita performing Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto and Petrenko conducting Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony.
But that RLPO concert, along with seven others, will now no longer take place as Covid-safe restrictions make full orchestra events performed in front of a live audience impossible.
The concerts affected also include a night of Queen hits, titled A Kind of Magic, on October 24; Brahms’ Piano Concerto No 2 played by Stephen Hough on October 29, and The Lark Ascending on October 31. The last two were due to be led by chief conductor designate Domingo Hindoyan.
A number of concerts planned for the Music Room and St George’s Hall during September and October have also been cancelled.
Instead, the Phil is hoping to present a new schedule of concerts beginning in October but is “still awaiting government guidance before confirming these details.”
Chief executive Michael Eakin said: "We have taken the difficult decision to cancel our advertised Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra concerts in September and October.
"However we're looking forward to announcing a new programme of concerts beginning in October. We will announce this revised programme at the end of August."
