Mesmerising Moon to shine on Merseyside once again

Artist Luke Jerram’s mesmerising Museum of the Moon is on its way back to Merseyside.

The giant inflatable lunar installation will be on show at Birkenhead Town Hall this autumn as part of 50th anniversary celebrations for the moon landings – and Wirral’s year as Borough of Culture.

More than 60,000 people flocked to see the atmospheric artwork when it was at Liverpool Cathedral last year (see photo above).

This time it will be hung in the assembly room at the grade II* listed town hall.

Visitors will be able to admire the detailed NASA imagery, with each centimetre of the 7m (23ft) sculpture representing 5km (just over three miles) of the moon’s surface.

The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones. Its visit to Wirral will be accompanied by a special programme of lunar-inspired events beneath it.

Museum of the Moon also forms part of a season of cultural events and activities linked to the moon and stars called Constellations which organisers hope will inspire audiences of all ages and encourage everyone to look up and enjoy Wirral’s big skies. More announcements about the programme will be made over the coming months.
