Audiences to go Wilde at Liverpool Parish Church

Oscar Wilde is coming to St Nick’s this summer as the church gardens are turned in to an open-air stage.

Actor and director Dean Sullivan brings an outdoor production of The Importance of Being Earnest to Liverpool Parish Church on July 27-28.

The former Brookside star had the idea of staging the play there after attending a Sunday church service.

He has previously directed open-air theatre at Speke Hall.

The Importance of Being Earnest will be performed at 6.30pm on Saturday, July 27 and 2.30pm on Sunday, July 28.

Audience members can bring rugs or folding chairs, or hire chairs on the day. They can also bring picnics or alternatively buy food and drink from neighbouring Ma Boyle’s.

Sullivan said: “To be bringing drama to the gardens at St Nick's will be a personal delight.”

The Rector of Liverpool, the Rev Canon Dr Crispin Pailing, added: “Liverpool Parish Church has a long track record of bringing art and music to the city around us. We have the perfect setting in the gardens, and this is a fantastic idea for using our grounds in a new way.

“I’ve known Dean for some years. It’s going to be great working with him on this, and it will be hugely enjoyable for the audience.”
