Sting launches The Last Ship in Liverpool

Sting paid a visit to Liverpool to launch his musical The Last Ship with an intimate performance of songs from the show at the Maritime Museum.

And the singer-songwriter said he believed the story, which takes place in the shipbuilding community of Wallsend – where he grew up – will appeal to Liverpool audiences.

Speaking at the event in front of press and invited guests he said: “Liverpool and Tyneside both have a fierce regional identity and a tradition of shipbuilding.”

The Last Ship was premiered on Broadway two years ago, and was also performed in a concert version at The Sage in Gateshead to mark the venue’s 10th anniversary and Cunard’s 175th.

It is coming to the Liverpool Playhouse next April as part of an inaugural UK tour, starring Jimmy Nail in the lead role of Gideon.

The show is described as an “epic tale of community, hope and a great act of collective defiance”.
