LOOK/17 brings a taste of China to Liverpool

A city hotel room turned in to a pinhole camera, the face of modern China in Liverpool and a look at how social housing solutions in Hong Kong are among the exhibits at this year's Livepool International Photography Festival.

LOOK/17 opens its doors at various city venues this Friday, April 7, with the theme for its 10th year being Cities of Exchange - twinning Liverpool and Hong Kong.

Commissions cover themes including architecture, commerce and colonialism.

And images taken in both cities will be on show between April 7 and May 14, and in some cases, beyond.

Open Eye Gallery, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is hosting Cultural Shifts: Global, featuring commissions from Luke Ching, who turned a room at the Titanic Hotel in to a pinhole camera; Wo Bik Wong - presenting newly-commissioned work made in the Port of Liverpool building alongside interiors and buildings of Hong Kong, and Derek Man.

The exhibition runs until June 18 at the Mann Island gallery.

Other exhibition spaces include The Forest I at Mann Island, Victoria Gallery & Museum, the Museum of Liverpool's Skylight Gallery, RIBA North, and Liverpool ONE, where British-Chinese photographer Yan Preston is showing a series of photographs made with the contemporary Chinese community in Liverpool.

LOOK/17 curator Ying Kwok says: "This festival centres on the themes of urbanism and the challenges we face globally and locally."
