Wicked flies Back in to the Liverpool Empire in 2024

Wicked will return to the Liverpool Empire in 2024 with a four-week run at the Lime Street theatre.

The smash hit, multi-award winning musical, which tells the ‘untold’ story of the witches of Oz, comes to the city from June 20 to July 14.

But don’t worry about getting out your credit card quite yet – tickets don’t go on sale until next June.

The Liverpool dates are part of a 20th anniversary, 10-city tour of UK and Ireland that starts at the Edinburgh Playhouse next December, and will be the first time the show has been at the Empire since 2018.

The blockbuster stage show is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, and tells backstory and future possibilities to the lives of L Frank Baum’s characters from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, revealing the decisions and events that shape the destinies of two unlikely university friends on their journey to becoming Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

The musical was premiered in San Francisco in June 2003 and transferred to Broadway the same year.

It made its West End debut at the Apollo Theatre in 2006 and has run at the theatre ever since, being seen by more than 11 million people in that time.

Empire Theatre director Diane Belding said: “We’re delighted to welcome back one of the most successful shows in the theatre’s history. I know the people of the region will be just as thrilled as we are.”

Cast for the new tour is yet to be announced.

Wicked is at the Liverpool Empire from June 20 to July 14 2024. Tickets on sale from June 8 2023.
