Unity Theatre issues open call for creatives to be part of its 2021 programme

Liverpool’s Unity Theatre is calling for the city’s creative community to create work to feature in its new season when the venue reopens next spring.

It has created an Open Call Programme which will support and stage work either in the Unity itself, somewhere else in the city or online.

Theatre bosses are keen to hear from theatre companies, performers, community practitioners, musicians, devisers, comedians, puppeteers, digital artists or spoken word artists who are interested in getting involved.

Chosen artists will receive a guaranteed fee of up to £1,250 for their performance along with extra funding to develop their application and refine their work.

And there will be a £3,000 commission available for creatives with a deaf or disability arts background and who might be shielding, with the commission enabling them to produce a piece of online work.

All the successful applicants – whether their work is performed in venue, offsite or online - will have the opportunity for it to be professionally recorded and uploaded to Unity’s new Programmers Portal which will be distributed to venues and festivals across the UK for tour consideration.

Programmed applicants will also have the opportunity to see their work developed for live stream to ensure shielded audiences can still access performances.

The programme is now open for expressions of interest, with a shortlist being chosen in the New Year. Those shortlisted will receive a £150 fee to progress their application to a second round with the successful applicants being chosen by the end of January.

The new Unity season is expected to run from February to May.
