Speedo Mick celebrated in new musical at Liverpool's Royal Court

Liverpool charity hero ‘Speedo Mick’ is set to be immortalised on stage in a new musical in the city next summer.

Speedo Mick – The Scouse Stomper will be premiered at the Royal Court from May 30 to July 5.

The musical is written by John Fay, with music from Chumbawomba’s Boff Whalley (Homebaked the Musical) and will be directed by Conrad Nelson.

Michael Cullen, aka Speedo Mick, was awarded Liverpool’s Citizen of Honour in May this year after raising more than £1million for disadvantaged young people and the homeless by walking the length and breadth of the country in nothing but a pair of Everton FC swimming trunks. He has also swum the Channel and climbed four mountains.

Speedo Mick – the Scouse Stomper is the story of a man who had lost everything. His family, his home, his mind, his soul, the lot. He’d burned every bridge and was left feeling angry and blue. As he got clean, he wanted to give something back, so he set about raising money.

The new musical celebrates one of the biggest characters to come out of a city of big characters, and who went from being the homeless guy in the shop doorway to raising more than £1m to help others.

Royal Court executive producer Kevin Fearon says: “We pride ourselves on telling the stories of Liverpool, and none is quite so weird and wonderful as Speedo Mick.

“As a charity fundraiser he has inspired millions, but we think there are aspects of his story that will tug on the heartstrings. It will be 10 years in 2025 since he began fundraising, so it's fitting that, to mark it, he gets his story told on the stage of Liverpool’s Royal Court."
