PurpleDoor brings the Bard to West Kirby
Liverpool’s PurpleDoor is bringing two Shakespeare plays to Wirral this month.
The theatre company will present Two Gentlemen of Verona and the rarely-seen King John at West Kirby Arts Centre on August 19 and 20.
The plays mark the first time PurpleDoor has performed since the start of the Covid pandemic.
Director Karl Falconer says: “King John and Two Gentlemen are some of Shakespeare’s earliest work and they’ve got all the ingredients that you come to know and love from his classics. There’s mystery, there’s intrigue, comedy…and a dog!
“They speak to us and although they’re plays you might be less familiar with, they're scarily in tune with the moment we're living through; questions about who should be in power, and what we do with that power, feel more timely than ever.”
PurpleDoor is currently preparing to work with the newly opened Shakespeare North Playhouse in 2023, and is also progressing plans to open its own versatile theatre space in Liverpool.
“We can't wait to celebrate the joy of being in a space together again after so long,” adds Falconer. “If you're interested in Shakespeare, don't miss this rare chance to see two underappreciated gems.”
