The Shawshank Redemption was nominated for seven Oscars when it hit our cinema screens in 1994.
Now the prison drama is coming to the stage at the Floral Pavilion this winter as part of a UK tour.
The production, based on Stephen King’s original 1992 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, and starring Joe McFadden as Andy Dufresne, will be at the New Brighton venue from November 4-8.
Fear will hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.
Despite protests of his innocence, banker Andy Dufresne is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murders of his wife and her lover. Incarcerated in the notorious Shawshank facility, he quickly learns that no one can survive alone.
Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things start to take a slight turn for the better. However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience and exploit his talents for accountancy, a desperate plan is quietly hatched…
The Shawshank Redemption examines friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum-security facility.
Adapted for the stage by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns, the Kenwright touring production also stars Ben Onwukwe as Ellis ‘Red’ Redding – the fellow prisoner who befriends Dufresne, and Bill Ward as corrupt warder Stammas. It is directed by Ellis Esbjornson.
