Liverpool Empire return for young Les Mis star Will

Les Mis has returned to the Liverpool Empire to kick off its 2022 programme – and the cast includes a young actor who started his career at the theatre.

Will Callan is making his professional debut as lovestruck student Marius in the touring musical which is due to run at the Empire until January 22.

The teenage actor, singer and songwriter joined the Liverpool Empire Youth Theatre in 2014 and last appeared on the Lime Street stage in summer 2021 when he took the role of Anatoly in Chess.

He also had starring roles in shows including In the Heights and RENT.

As well as his time with the Empire’s youth theatre, Callan was also a semi-finalist in the Voice Kids UK and in 2020 he released his debut single Losing Our Minds.

He says: “Since performing as Anatoly in Chess, my final show with the Liverpool Empire Youth Theatre, I’ve been on a rollercoaster of a journey - from daily rehearsals at the National Youth Theatre in London for a month, to performing eight to nine shows a week (in Les Mis) at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal.

“I’ve loved every moment of playing the role of Marius in Les Misérables so far and I’m incredibly excited about doing so for the entirety of the UK and Ireland tour, which lasts until January next year.

“I’m also thrilled to be returning to the Empire Theatre, not only to be on that stage again but to be in a professional production such as Les Mis in a place that’s so close to my heart. I can’t wait to be back. It’s going to be emotional!”

And Natalie Flynn, the Empire’s senior creative learning manager, adds: “I’m always so proud of all our alumni and love seeing what they all go on to achieve after they leave the youth theatre, whether it's in the industry or not.

“Many of them remain connected to the group visiting when they can to support next generation of young performers through masterclasses and careers insight sessions.

“Will was a key member of the youth theatre for many years, most recently performing with us in August 2021. We're delighted to see him returning to the Empire Theatre stage as a professional.”
