Liverpool date for The Merchant of Venice 1936

An acclaimed new version of The Merchant of Venice which relocates the story to 1930s London is heading for Liverpool next spring.

Ambition, power and political unrest explode on to the stage in The Merchant of Venice 1936 which comes to the Liverpool Playhouse from February 4-8, 2025.

The ‘electrifying’ production stars Tracy-Ann Oberman as Shylock, a resilient single mother and steely, hard-working businesswoman in the capital’s East End where tensions are simmering with the rise of Oswald Mosley’s fascist Blackshirts.

When Antonio, a charismatic merchant, comes to her for a loan a high-stakes deal is struck. But will Shylock take her revenge. And who will pay the ultimate price?

The Watford Palace Theatre and Manchester HOME co-production, directed by Brigid Lamour, arrives in Liverpool following runs at the RSC and in the West End.

The Merchant of Venice 1936 is at the Liverpool Playhouse from February 4-8, 2025. Tickets HERE
