Milap takes Diwali digital with a week of online celebrations

Diwali is going digital this month with an online programme of cultural celebrations from Milap.

The UK’s leading Indian arts and culture organisation is planning a week of music and dance to enjoy from the comfort of your own living room.

The celebration starts on Monday, November 9 and runs until Sunday, November 15.

Diwali is one of the most important festivals of India and symbolizes the spiritual ‘victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance’.

The Milap programme of events will feature both internationally renowned performers and also some rising stars.

The festival opens on November 9 with a performance by sitar player Shakir Khan, son of sitar maestro, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan.

There will be two participatory sessions with artist-in-residence, dance specialist Sheetal Maru.

And Milap is also joining forces with Digital Diwali to showcase four additional events including The Home Coming on Saturday, November 1 - a 20 minute performance of dance and storytelling featuring the final part of seven days of stories by Supriya Nagarajan’s songs in a variety of Indian languages.

The week also includes morning, afternoon and evening Raaga concert performances under the banner of Music for the Mind and Soul.

Pravinder Singh, Milap’s head of programmes and planning, says: "Milap is delighted to bring this online Diwali programme to the people of Liverpool and beyond, featuring the very best of Indian arts.

“Diwali was last celebrated by Milap back at the Lowry in Salford over 10 years ago, where we had a programme of events in the Quays Theatre followed by fireworks display off the Quays, which is now the home of Media City.

“Now we’re back virtually in Liverpool, broadcasting all over the world.”
