Summer Arts Market cancelled due to Coronavirus pandemic
The Summer Arts Market planned for Liverpool Cathedral this June has been cancelled.
The popular annual event was due to take place on Saturday, June 6.
Thousands of people regularly flock to the market – the biggest arts fair in the region - which is one of two, along with its winter equivalent, which are organised by Open Culture each year.
The Summer Arts Market was due to attract up to 200 artisan craftsmen and women from across the North West and beyond who sell handcrafted and unique gifts – from pottery and woodcarving to soaps, candles, jewellery, cards and prints, glassware, photography, clothing, furniture and food – in stalls laid out in the cathedral nave and well.
A vintage market and food markets take place in the basement.
A statement on the Open Culture Facebook page said: “We’re incredibly sad to have to do this, but it’s necessary to keep in line with government advice and keep our artists, our audiences and ourselves as safe as possible.
“We were so looking forward to hosting 200 incredible artists, and our amazing visitors, and we’ll be back nearer the end of the year with our winter event – due to be held on December 5.”
It is the latest cultural event to fall victim to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Open Culture is also the organisation behind the annual LightNight celebrations which have been postponed from Friday, May 15.
