Sweet Mother brings hidden history to the Liverpool stage

A special slice of L8 history is brought to the stage in the city this month.

Sweet Mother, coming to the Royal Court Studio, is part of a new oral history project which has captured important and, until now, untold stories from the Toxteth area.

The Nwoko Theatre Company production is set in a time of racial unrest in Liverpool and celebrates the strength and resilience of white women who fell in love with and married black men.

The play, which combines music, movement and song with humour, covers the period from post-war 1950s to the turbulent 1980s.

Nwoko Arts artistic director Maria Paul interviewed dozens of women from the Liverpool 8 community, and Sweet Mother uses verbatim accounts to tell the stories of four of them; Joan Caddick, Marie Chicken, Josie Burger and Vera McRae.

The cast includes Margaret Connell, Amanda George and Lisa McMahon.

Sweet Mother is at the Royal Court Studio on March 13-14. Tickets HERE
