Peace Doves fly in to Liverpool Cathedral

First there was the moon. Then the Earth. And now a giant flock of birds are set to appear suspended in mid-air inside Liverpool Cathedral.

Peace Doves, a mass participation art project created in collaboration with renowned sculptor and artist Peter Walker, will take over the interior of the grade I listed landmark from May 8-31.

In a symbolic gesture of peace, the artwork will be unveiled on the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Dove-themed family sessions are set to take place over half-term, from February 17-21, during which youngsters will have the chance to write messages of hope, peace and human dignity on paper doves.

And between now and April 19, visitors of all ages will also be asked to share their thoughts on thousands of doves which will be threaded together by the artist to create a large-scale installation in the Well.

Walker first created the Peace Doves installation, consisting of 20,000 paper doves, in Lichfield Cathedral between December 2018 and January 2019.

His art practice consists of large-scale sculpture, commissioned and bespoke sculptural works as well as paintings, drawings, film, sound and light installations.

Peace Doves follows art Luke Jerram's Gaia and Museum of the Moon which both attracted tens of thousands of visitors when they were on show in the cathedral well.
