St George's Hall Minton floor goes on show

St George’s Hall’s rare Minton tiled floor is on show to the public this month.

The Great Hall’s exquisite expanse of 30,000 decorative tiles are usually covered by a protective wooden flooring cover.

But each summer the floor is revealed, giving the chance for people to take a close look at the 165-year-old decoration – which was the largest Minton tiled floor in the world when it was installed in the grade I listed landmark.

Thousands of visitors are expected to see the immaculately preserved surface which depicts the city’s coat of arms, sea nymphs, dolphins and tritons.

This year – the ninth time the floor has been uncovered since the hall reopened after restoration in 2007 - will also see the first-ever marriage take place on the tiles.

And there will be a number of public events including two special tours, Walk the Floor and Night on the Tiles.

Meanwhile on Sunday, August 4, Music on the Mintons will see city organist Professor Ian Tracey perform with Liverpool mezzo soprano Danielle Louise Thomas.

The floor will be open from 10am to 5pm on most days until August 26.

Entry costs £5 per person on the door, and £2 for children aged 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Ticket Quarter for £3 plus booking fee.
