Bluecoat encourages young artists to Rise Up! this summer
Youngsters are being encouraged to explore activism through art at Liverpool’s Bluecoat this summer.
The School Lance centre for contemporary art is inviting children to Rise Up! and create artwork which will take over its first floor gallery.
Inspired by the example of young people who are taking a stand on climate change across the globe, the gallery will provide a space for youngsters aged seven and over to make their voices heard through art, with artist-designed resources available daily and artist-led workshops.
Rise Up! forms part of a summer season of exhibitions at Bluecoat examining society, migration and the environment, accompanying Shezad Dawood’s Leviathan and Grace Ndiritu’s The Ark.
Young visitors will be able to create and exhibit their own work in the space, creating an ever changing exhibition.
Artists Chris Alton and Kiara Mohammed will lead individual free workshops on selected dates, giving children and young people aged five and over a dedicated day to create work for display within the exhibition.
They start this Friday, August 2, when Chris Alton will hold a cityscape family workshop from 1-4pm.
Using collages, drawings, images and 3D elements, participants will work together to create freestanding ‘cityscapes’ which incorporate places to live, work, learn and play. Alton will encourage visitors to think about how cities create energy, dispose of waste and tackle climate change.
On Saturday, August 31 there will be a workshop by Kiara Mohammad from 1-4pm.
Meanwhile the Bluecoat Summer School for seven to 11-year-olds takes place from August 12-15, from 10am to 4pm daily, and will give them a chance to take part in a variety of creative activities inspired by Rise Up! with a mini-exhibition at the end of the four days.
They will also have the opportunity to work towards a Discover Arts Award, a
nationally recognised qualification that encourages children to grow and develop as
artists.
The cost is £80 for the full four days.
