Powerful drama Festen comes to Hope Street Theatre

Liverpool actor and director Scot Williams will present a new production of the powerful drama Festen in the city this month.

The play, based on the award-winning Danish film of the same name, satirises the hypocrisy of a large and wealthy family by observing the events that unfold at the ancestral home during a reunion held to celebrate their father's 60th birthday.

As his son starts to give a speech it becomes clear that rather than praising his father he is accusing him of a terrible act. But is his son's cold rage is justified or the product of a deranged imagination?

David Eldridge’s stage adaptation was premiered at the Almeida Theatre in London in 2004.

It will be at Liverpool’s Hope Street Theatre from May 23-25.

And all proceeds from the show will go to NAPAC (the National Association for People Abused in Childhood).

Williams says: “I only direct plays whose subject matter is close to my heart. As somebody who has been close to survivors of childhood sexual abuse, I know only too well how important a charity such as NAPAC really is.

“The availability of an outlet, a kind ear and a shoulder to lean on can at time literally be a life saver.”
