Astronaut Helen Sharman to visit Earth in Liverpool

Astronaut Helen Sharman will take part in two events under the giant Earth in Liverpool Cathedral as part of this year’s River Festival.

The 55-year-old, who became the first Briton in space when she joined the Soyuz mission to the Mir station in 1991, will appear in a public event at the cathedral on Sunday, June 2.

In Out of This World she will talk about her experience of space travel and the intense preparation that went into her launching into the history books 28 years ago, as well as reflecting on the importance of teamwork, leadership, communication and motivation.

The 6.30pm event will also feature a question and answer session. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £10 for under 16s (over 10s only) plus £1 booking fee.

Her second appearance will be a private event, How to be an Astronaut, aimed at school pupils in Year 6 and above.

Artist Luke Jerram’s Gaia, a stunning and atmospheric 23ft inflatable Earth, will be in orbit at Liverpool Cathedral from May 25 to June 23. It follows his Museum of the Moon last May which attracted 60,000 visitors.
