International Women's Day marked at Liverpool museums

A series of special events are due to take place across Liverpool museums and galleries to mark International Women’s Day this Friday.

National Museums Liverpool will celebrate the annual day with talks, screenings and performances.

The Walker Art Gallery presents a special talk, Women at the Walker, at 2pm where Jessie Petheram, Tomlinson Assistant Curator, and Kate O’Donoghue, National Gallery Curatorial Trainee, shine a light on two women artists in the gallery’s collection.

At 2pm, Merseyside Maritime Museum will screen the film Albert Nobbs, which stars Glenn Close and Janet McTeer.

Meanwhile at noon the Museum of Liverpool is sharing the stories of women football fans in Girl Fans Kicking Off, while you can also see the ongoing display Taking Liberties: Women’s Suffrage in Liverpool.

The International Slavery Museum has four events on International Women’s Day itself.

At 11am there’s a chance to listen to an archive curator’s talk, while at 1pm meet spoken word artist Jubeda Khatun for an inspiring curative workshop where you can learn to write and perform your own poetry.

Alternatively, join Congolese multi-disciplinary artist Dorcas Sebuyange for a spoken word performance between 1-1.30pm, and then at 3pm poet Empress-jai gives a talk celebrating the life of Jamaica’s Nanny of the Maroons.

And finally, at Sudley House there’s a chance to see the ongoing exhibition Model Image: Fashion and photos from the 1950s.
