The £10,000 Liverpool Hope Playwriting Prize returns

The Liverpool Hope Playwriting Prize is back for a third time – and with one of the biggest first prizes in the country.

The winner of this year’s competition, a partnership between Liverpool Hope University and Royal Court Liverpool and which aims to find the best new comedy play, will receive £10,000 and the chance to potentially have it professionally staged.

Katie Mulgrew, who won the inaugural prize, saw her play Omnibus premiered at the Unity Theatre last year.

And the Royal Court is currently in discussions with a number of venues about producing actor and writer Simon Bradbury’s prize-winning The Last Act of Love of J B Moliere, which beat 2,000 submissions in the last competition.

Meanwhile Gerry Linford, whose play was highly commended in 2017, will have his work The Miracle of Great Homer Street staged at the Royal Court next month with Les Dennis – one of the judges - in the leading role.

The judging panel for this year’s competition includes Les Dennis, playwright’s John Godber and Maurice Bessman, and me!

Royal Court co-chief executive Kevin Fearon, who will also be on the judging panel for 2019, said: “We’ve been delighted to be involved with the Playwriting Prize for the last four years. We’ve seen a huge number of entries for both of the previous competitions from all around the country and we’re looking forward to doing it all again.

“The quality of the scripts has meant that the judging is always a difficult process, but it means that the very best are chosen for the award.”

Liverpool Hope University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Gerald Pillay said: “We’re pleased to be partnering with The Royal Court Theatre once again in the search for talented writers.”

The closing date for submissions is July 22 and the competition is judged anonymously. Entrants must be over 18 and live in the UK or Ireland.
