Rita, Sue and Bob Too at the Liverpool Playhouse

Everyman alumnus George Costigan made the role of lothario Bob his own on the big screen.

Now the play Rita, Sue and Bob Too is coming to the Ev’s sister theatre the Liverpool Playhouse with a new Bob and babysitters.

Playwright Andrea Dunbar’s tragi-comedy is directed by Max Stafford-Clark, who has recently announced he is stepping down after 23 years as artistic director of the popular Out of Joint theatre company, which he co-founded in 1993 and which has become a firm favourite with Liverpool audiences.

Stafford-Clark directed the original production of Rita, Sue and Bob Too at the Royal Court in London in 1982.

The play tells the story of two working class northern teenagers Rita and Sue, who babysit for local couple Bob and wife Michelle. Bob starts an affair with both girls, a situation that soon gets out of control.

This production features Hollyoaks’ James Atherton as Bob, while there are two Merseyside actresses in the cast – Southport’s Sally Bankes as Sue’s mother, and Samantha Robinson who recently appeared in Jeff Pope’s acclaimed Rhys Jones TV drama Little Boy Blue.

Rita, Sue and Bob Too is at the Liverpool Playhouse from October 10-14. Tickets from the website HERE.
