How to celebrate Sgt Pepper in Liverpool on June 1
It was 50 years ago on Thursday that Sgt Pepper taught the band to play – and the album which came to define the Summer of Love was released.
Liverpool is celebrating the golden anniversary of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with a festival featuring 13 new commissions.
The Sgt Pepper at 50 event runs over three weeks. But what is there to do in the city if you want to mark the actual day itself?
Here are a few ideas.
Sgt Pepper at the Luminarium
Head for Chavasse Park on Thursday where Liverpool ONE’s Luminarium – an immersive and interactive sculpture - is marking the anniversary by being transformed in to a labyrinth of live performances representing the tracks from the album.
As you make your journey around The Luminarium, you will discover a mix of musical and spoken word performances by artists from LIPA, Merseyside Dance and Drama Centre, and professional actors who will interpret the Beatles’ songs.

It Was 50 Years Ago Today
The Cavern Club marks the anniversary with a special show by the Cavern Club Beatles on Thursday.
It Was 50 Years Ago Today will feature all the songs from the iconic album played live, along with other Beatle hits from 1967 including Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane and All You Need is Love.

Sgt Pepper 50th Anniversary Cruise
Take to the water on a Mersey Ferry for a special anniversary cruise to celebrate 50 years since the launch of Sgt Pepper, with live music onboard from the Paperback Writers.
The Dazzle Ferry, which had its exterior design created by Sgt Pepper album cover artist Sir Peter Blake, is scheduled to operate the two-hour cruise, and a licensed bar along with a hot and cold food offer will be available.

Head for Picturehouse at FACT to watch Alan Parker’s new star-studded ‘rockumentary’ about the making of Sgt Pepper.
The film features interviews with former employees, fellow musicians, family members and journalists, supported by a vast array of original and exclusive never-seen-before footage.
The event will also include a Q&A.

Suspended Time
The Sgt Pepper at 50 festival itself continues on Thursday with this unique free event in Woolton Woods by the French pyrotechnic masters behind a host of Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.
Part-performance, part-storytelling, part-pyrotechnic display, Suspended Time – inspired by Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds - will be unlike any event staged in Liverpool before.
