WoW Fest returns in May

Liverpool's Writing on the Wall Festival returns next month and there's revolution in the air.

WoWFest is set to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution.

And it is launching this year's event with a May Day Parade and the launch of the long-awaited biography of the late Liverpool writer and activist - and all round character - George Garrett.

Organisers say they also want to invite communities across Liverpool and beyond to 'make their voice heard' on issues affecting people today, from homelessness and discrimination to low pay.

Along with the revolutionary theme, a host of well-known names have also been unveiled for the month-long festival.

They include a visit from Henry Normal, co-writer of shows including The Royal Family and The Mrs Merton Show, as well as producer of Gavin and Stacey, Alan Partridge and the Oscar-nominated Philomena.

Here, in an evening at the Music Room at the Philharmonic Hall on May 3, he will be showcasing his first poetry anthology in 20 years.

Other names appearing at WoW include poet Ian McMillan, Chocolat writer Joanne Harris, and Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis.

Back on the revolutionary debate front, writers China Miéville, John Rees and Kate Evans will be at Revolution on May 3.
