March is upon us. There are daffodils in the parks, chocolate eggs and hot cross buns – both traditional and not-so-traditional – in the shops, the days are getting longer and soon the clocks will ‘spring forward’.
The days aren’t just getting longer with daylight at each end, but they are also, dare I say it, getting just that bit warmer too.
With the hibernation of winter behind us, now is the ideal time to come out and enjoy everything Liverpool’s theatres have to offer.
With that in mind, here is what you can see where between now and the Easter weekend.
Over at the Royal Court, Gerry Linford’s comedy The Peaceful Hour 2 continues to entertain audiences until March 7. Follow the exploits of lovebirds Ange and Carl on the eve of their big day. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
A second production rolling over from February is The Memory of Water which you can see at the Everyman until March 14. Shelagh Stephenson’s black comedy which features a trio of bickering sisters coming together to plan their late mum’s funeral has been revived to mark its 30th anniversary.
The Empire kicks off its March programme with a visit from the acclaimed National Theatre production of James Graham’s Olivier Award-winning Dear England. It runs from March 3-7 and stars David Sturzaker as England football manager Gareth Southgate and Samantha Womack as psychologist Pippa Grange.
HG Wells’ classic War of the Worlds is given the imitating the dog (Heart of Darkness. Dracula) treatment at the Playhouse from March 4-7 while Priscilla Queen of the Desert motors into the Empire from March 9-14.
The Playhouse is also the venue for the RSC’s production of The Constant Wife which comes to the Williamson Square theatre from March 10-14. Laura Wade has adapted Somerset Maugham’s source novel, music is by Jamie Cullen and Kara Tointon stars in the title role.
Then two one-women plays take place at two different theatres on two consecutive nights. Catch the story of hopeless romantic Maddie in Virtually Intimate at the Hope Street Theatre on March 12 and then see Elizabeth Huskisson’s critically acclaimed Where Have All Our Women Gone? at the Unity Theatre on March 13.
Sam Mendes has been out and about filming his Beatle biopics in the city. And ‘John’ and ‘Paul’ are also back on stage at the Royal Court this month as Come Together returns for another residency. Catch it between March 13 and 28.
Everyman rep alumni Matthew Kelly and George Costigan reunite at the theatre in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot which is set to be staged from March 17 to April 4.
Liverpool’s very own Jodie Comer reprises her Olivier and Tony Award-winning role in Prima Facie at the Playhouse from March 17-21. Tickets sold out in about five minutes so if you’ve got one, lucky you.
Mandala Theatre Company presents Incarcerating Eve at the Unity on March 18, while the Hope Place theatre welcomes the return of its Up Next Festival from March 25-28, now in its fifth year, showcasing work in progress pieces from local creatives on the Unity stage.
And last but not least, if you missed The Shawshank Redemption when it came to the Floral Pavilion last year, there’s another chance to catch it, this time at the Playhouse from March 31 to April 4.
