La Feria festival returns to Liverpool venues for 2023

A festival celebrating Latin American arts and culture returns to Liverpool city centre this September.

La Feria runs from September 20-23, and is organised by the city’s Luma Creations who are promising a ‘vibrant and eclectic programme’ of music, dance, storytelling, street art and culture from across the Latin American world.

It includes the ‘voice of tango’, Argentinean Martin Alvarado and Mexican and Columbian electronic and ‘cumbia’ group Mambe & Danochilango.

The festival opens at the Unity Theatre on September 20 with a double bill featuring MC Millaray, the force of the underground Chilean hip hop scene, who is making her UK debut, and UK-based Bolivian Victor Rios who brings his show How British Are We? to the Hope Place venue.

Their appearances will be followed by a Q&A around the subject of identity, led by journalist Pablo Navarrete.

The festival continues at the Unity on September 21 with three commissions focussing on identity by dancers from Bolivia, Columbia, Mexico, Spain and Liverpool, followed by a performance from Andean Latin Groove purveyors Lokandes who are making their first appearance in the city.

On September 22, La Feria moves to the Music Room at the Philharmonic Hall where Martin Alvarado will headline, appearing with Geraldo Villar and Los Aguirre guitar quartet, and the all-female Chilean group Bandita La Inquieta will also perform.

And the festival finale takes place at District in the Baltic Triangle with performances from Mambe & Danochilango, Roxy & Toby (Venezuela and the UK) and Cidtronyck from Chile.

Luma Creations promotes Latin American and diversity arts and artists. The organisation produces an annual programme of events, performances, festivals and projects, and is present in a range of national festivals and carnivals.

Artistic director Francisco Carrasco says: "La Feria 2023 promises to be exciting and thought provoking, and may be the best one yet."
