A Liverpool launderette is becoming the city's latest art gallery with a new exhibition of photography celebrating the community it sits in.
Kitty’s After Dark is being shown at Kitty’s Launderette in Anfield, with a special launch event for residents taking place tomorrow evening.
Kayleigh Walmsley’s work captures an atmospheric view of the community hub.
The Grasmere Street launderette will also act as the venue for never-before-seen images from People of Anfield, an artist residency co-commissioned by Culture Liverpool and Open Eye Gallery.
That ended with an exhibition at the Mann Island gallery titled The Flowers Still Grow.
Now a specially chosen collection of images will also be shown in the courtyard of Kitty’s, including some new pieces of work, to celebrate the project.
Fashion design graduate Walmsley, who is events lead and laundry co-op worker, became inspired to take up photography after having her daughter Edie and went on to study at Liverpool College.
She says: “My past projects have been about the renewal of life after giving birth and that’s what inspired me with this creative outlet.
“Working at Kitty’s gave me the opportunity to develop my project Kitty’s After Dark in collaboration with the people of Anfield, who I have worked alongside.
“My aim was to capture a sense of space and community within my local area. My intention with this series was to focus on the emphasis of space and low lighting to create an ominous style throughout, that leaves the viewers intrigued and inspired to visit.”
Kitty’s Launderette, named after Liverpool washhouse pioneer Kitty Wilkinson, was at the heart of the People of Anfield project.
The community hub hosted regular creative workshops with writer Pauline Rowe and photographer Emma Case, who worked with residents to co-produce the display.
Kitty’s After Dark and the People of Anfield display are at Kitty’s Launderette. A special event takes place tomorrow, June 13 from 6-9pm More details HERE
