Christmas Countdown calendar brings festive fun to Liverpool city centre

Enjoy an Advent calendar of pop-up seasonal treats in Liverpool city centre this Christmas.

Paperwork Theatre is behind the Christmas Countdown which will take place from 6pm each Thursday to Saturday between now and December 18 and then on December 21-23.

The unexpected entertainment will encompass everything from stories to song and dance to drag, and involves a host of talented Liverpool entertainers and organisations. Around 80 creatives are involved across the 12 separate events.

The free happenings will take place in Church Street from this Thursday, December 2 with some also involving the Clayton Square, Whitechapel or Williamson Square areas.

Performances take inspiration from the advent themes of joy, peace, hope and love, and will be accompanied by Paperwork’s dedicated team of elves who will launch the nightly countdown.

Paperwork Theatre has received Culture Liverpool Without Walls funding to stage the feast of festive fun. It is working in partnership with Open Culture and with additional support from Liverpool BID Company and Marks & Spencer.

Co-artistic director Nicole Behan said: “We understand this year has been extremely difficult for all our communities, and we anticipate the festive season will also bring its own set of challenges.

“This production seeks to bring people together to experience the joy of theatre, music, art, and live events while also encouraging people to stay and play in Liverpool BID’s shopping areas - and valuing and reminding them of what they have in the city centre.”
