My Best Friend's Wedding the Musical coming to Liverpool
A new musical version of Hollywood hit My Best Friend’s Wedding is coming to the Liverpool Empire – in 2022.
The show, co-written by Liverpool’s Jonathan Harvey and the film’s original screenwriter Ronald Bass, will be staged at the Lime Street theatre from March 7-12.
It stars Alexandra Burke as Julianne Potter, the role played by Julia Roberts in the 1990s movie, and has a soundtrack of Bacharach and David classics including I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, Walk on By, I Say A Little Prayer and What’s New Pussycat?
Food critic Julianne Potter has always turned her nose up at romance - it’s the reason she broke up with her sweetheart Michael O’Neal.
When she hears he’s about to be married, she vows to win him back for good, but with perfect Kimmy in the way, it’s not as easy as she first thought.
Can she derail her best friend’s wedding in time and keep Michael all for herself?
Liverpool author, playwright and screenwriter Jonathan Harvey
Harvey’s previous musicals include Closer to Heaven – created with the Pet Shop Boys, and Dusty. But My Best Friend’s Wedding is the first time he has co-written a musical.
The pair worked on it in person, and by phone and email, sending versions of the script backwards and forwards between Liverpool and LA.
Harvey said: “If you’re going to co-write with someone, co-write with someone who has won an Oscar!
“We spent a week together in January in Beverly Hills at the hotel he has his offices in, and we thrashed a few things out. And it just worked.
“We had long phone conversations. I was on the phone to him for so long one night that my phone wouldn’t work the next day because I didn’t have any special tariff on phoning LA!”
My Best Friend’s Wedding is at the Liverpool Empire from March 7-12 2022. Tickets HERE
