Lady Lever reveals Matisse show in a stellar 2019

It’s proving to be a big year for Lady Lever Art Gallery.

Not only is the Port Sunlight landmark set to showcase the work of Dutch Master Rembrandt, but it has now also announced an exhibition of work by French great Henri Matisse.

The venue will play host to Matisse: Drawing with Scissors from October 2019 until March 20.

The Hayward Gallery touring exhibition features 35 posthumous prints of cut-out works created by Matisse in his final years when he was confined to his bed.

It includes a number of well-known images such as The Snail and The Blue Nudes.

The show follows hot on the heels of Rembrandt In Print, which runs from June 1 to September 15 and which will feature around 50 outstanding prints from the Ashmolean Museum which have never been displayed together before.

National Museums Liverpool’s director of art galleries Sandra Penketh said: “These are two very different artists but what they have in common is their great renown and enormous influence.

“We’re very excited to be bringing two world-famous artists to our visitors, back-to-back, during the Wirral Borough of Culture Year.

“Matisse: Drawing with Scissors is coming to Wirral for the first time in more than 10 years.

“We will also be the first gallery to display Rembrandt in Print, in the year which also marks 350 years since Rembrandt’s death.”
