In The Heights debuts at the Liverpool Empire

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights is being staged by young actors at the Liverpool Empire this month.

The multi-Tony Award winning musical is set in the Washington Heights community in New York, with the action taking place over three days.

It was conceived by the then college student Miranda in 1999 – pre-dating his Broadway and West End smash hit hip hop musical Hamilton by almost two decades.

The show had its Broadway premiere in 2008 and was nominated for 11 coveted Tony Awards, winning four. Meanwhile its cast recording won a Grammy Award for best musical show album.

In 2016 the London production won three Olivier Awards.

In The Heights is being brought to the Liverpool stage by the Empire Youth Theatre.

Creative Learning Manager Natalie Flynn said, “There’s such as buzz around Lin-Manuel Miranda at the moment, particularly with Hamilton’s success at the Olivier Awards, so it’s really exciting to be able to present our production of his amazing musical In The Heights.

“It’s an extremely topical musical that explores themes around diversity and acceptance. It’s about knowing where you’re from and what your roots are but also understanding where your dreams can take you to.

“There are so many styles to be explored including salsa and hip hop as well as traditional musical theatre, and the company are definitely up to the challenge.”
