Chester Storyhouse prepares for summer rep season

Chester Storyhouse is preparing for its second summer season of shows which will play at the striking former cinema venue.

Steven Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning A Little Night Music will launch the season on May 5. The musical is being directed by Storyhouse artistic director Alex Clifton and will run in rep until July 8.

The plot revolves around the tangled web that surrounds an actress and the men who love her, and the show's songs include the famous Send In the Clowns.

Swallows and Amazons, based on Arthur Ransome’s classic children’s adventures and adapted by Bryony Lavery, runs from June 1 to 30 and will also entertain audience members of all ages at Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre over July and August.

And the final production of Storyhouse’s new rep season is Arthur Miller’s searing Salem witch trials drama The Crucible, being staged from June 15 to July 7.

Storyhouse artistic director Alex Clifton said: “Our company of more than 50 performers will present a season full of joy, passion and delight - which definitely offers something for everyone.

“A Little Night Music is one of the greatest musicals of the 20th century and will make for a gorgeous night out, Swallows and Amazons lit up my childhood and captures the best and wildest bits of all our school holidays, and The Crucible is a political thriller that follows on brilliantly from our exhilarating production of Julius Caesar last summer.”
