BBC Sports Personality of the Year at Echo Arena

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is coming back to the Echo Arena 10 years after it was last staged in the city.

Some of the greatest names in sport will descend on the waterfront venue tonight to celebrate brilliant sporting achievements.

Among the shortlisted stars are Lewis Hamilton, Jonnie Peacock, Sir Mo Farah, tennis player Johanna Konta, speed skater Elise Christie and swimmer Adam Peaty.

Tickets for the televised December 17 extravaganza are £49.50.

This will be the second time that BBC Sports Personality of the Year has come from Liverpool, having previously hosted it back in 2008 when cyclist Sir Chris Hoy won the prestigious award.

Of course Liverpool is no stranger to sporting stars, and in addition to two Premiership football clubs it’s the is the birthplace of athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and boxer Tony Bellew, to name just a few.

Last year saw Wimbledon champion Sir Andy Murray crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year for a record third time, ahead of triathlete Alistair Brownlee and showjumper Nick Skelton.

Presenter Gabby Logan says: ““I love Liverpool. There is a real sense of passion and pride about the place and the people who live there. We want to create a fantastic atmosphere on the night for everyone in the arena and at home - I know Liverpool will deliver that.”

And Ian Ayre, chair of The ACC Liverpool Group, which includes Echo Arena Liverpool, added: “We are honoured to host BBC Sports Personality of the Year for a second time in Echo Arena Liverpool.

“It was a great success when it was held here during the venue’s inaugural year and we are pleased to welcome back this prestigious event to Liverpool – a city with such an illustrious sporting heritage.”
