Liverpool Pier Head Village summer festival launch

Liverpool’s waterfront summer festival launches today.

The Pier Head Village will offer a host of entertainment on the banks of the Mersey between now and September 10.

Attractions include fairground rides, an artisan market, Sound City Bar with live acoustic music, and a Beach Bar and Restaurant.

And also, from next Wednesday, art lovers can enjoy wandering around this year’s Liverpool Art Fair and Gallery, which is moving to a special location on the Pier Head and will be open throughout the summer.

A host of events are also being planned over the next two-and-a-half months, including a Morris Dancing Competition this Sunday, the main Brazilica Festival day on July 15, and The Artisan Takeover from September 8-10.

Meanwhile each Sunday in August, award-winning wood sculptor Simon O’Rourke will be on site to transform four huge tree trunks in to statues of the Beatles, using only a chainsaw, inspired by the statue which stands on the Pier Head.

The feat will come to a climax during International Beatleweek over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and the finished sculptures will be auctioned off for charity.

Martin O’Shea, creator of the Pier Head Village, said: “Bringing people together, entertaining them and giving them a reason to spend many happy hours on the Pier Head enjoying the summer is our goal for this year.

“With the partnership with Liverpool Sound City and wonderful stakeholders such as Liverpool Art Fair, Sunset Sessions, Liverpool City Council, The Cavern Club, Field Vision and all the artisan traders, we have created an attraction that is fitting for our wonderful city, at arguably the most exciting time in its history.

“The Pier Head Village will reflect everything we love about our city.”
