Beatleweek goes virtual to beat the Covid pandemic
Liverpool’s International Beatleweek is set to go ahead after all this month – albeit in strictly socially-distanced fashion.
So socially distanced in fact that bands who would normally fly in from all over the world to perform at the Fab Four festival are being asked to send video of their sets instead.
The film footage will then be screened to a limited live audience of people in the Cavern Club and online for Beatles’ fans across the globe to enjoy.
The annual August Bank Holiday event usually attracts dozens of bands and thousands of music fans to Liverpool.
Speaking about the ‘virtually’ International Beatleweek, Cavern Club director Bill Heckle said: “International Beatleweek is the highlight of the year for many of our loyal customers from around the world, and for that reason, we couldn’t let a year go by without doing something to mark the occasion.
“It’s obviously going to be very different with social distancing and Covid safety measures in place, but we’re sure the Cavern’s evocative spirit will remain as we bring fans together to celebrate the music of the Fab Four, safely and at a distance.
“The Cavern has seen many closures in its 63-year history, but none have been because of a pandemic. We’re having to adjust our business operation but re-opening our doors after five months feels monumental.
“Most of all, we are looking forward to welcoming people back to the world famous club.”
The Cavern has been closed since lockdown started in March, with the only entrance available on a guided tour from the Cavern Pub or Festival Restaurant.
The venue has had a new air conditioning system installed which brings a constant stream of fresh air into the club.
It will reopen to visitors from noon to 10pm from Thursday, August 27 to Tuesday, September 1 with a full schedule of live performances shown simultaneously on giant screens on both the Front Stage and in the Live Lounge as well as the Cavern Pub and on Facebook.
There will be a significantly reduced capacity in both venues.
