Giants bid an emotional farewell to Liverpool
The Giants have made their final journey after 25 years of entertaining millions of people around the world.
And as they slipped away on Liverpool’s waterfront today, the man behind the mammoth visitors bade them – and the city that has taken them to its hearts – an emotional goodbye.
Royal de Luxe artistic director Jean-Luc Courcoult said: “From the heart of this company I hold you in my giant arms. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
An estimated 1.3 million people are believed to have turned out over three days to experience Liverpool’s Dream – exceeding the Three Queens in 2015 and making it the biggest public event the city has ever held.
This morning a procession led by a fiddle player sitting atop a pile of violins made its way along The Strand, stopping at the Salthouse Dock where Big Giant and Xolo watched as the Little Boy Giant was lowered on to the water in the huge sandal which first made its appearance on the waterfront last Thursday.
The remaining two Giants walked through large crowds as far as Sefton Street where they settled down for their customary lunchtime siesta outside HMS Eaglet.
And when they awoke there was a surprise for the crowds who had waited patiently as they slumbered – as Little Girl Giant joined the others for their final journey down the Liverpool waterfront.
